Where Are You From?

30 May

Frequently Asked Questions…

There’s also a really interesting discussion about this on Quora:
Is it racist to ask “where are you from originally?”

Let’s keep the conversation open and curious. And respectful.

Another friend had just posted that link earlier, so I was already thinking about it. The version I run into: “So where are you from?” “New York.” “No, but before that?” “No, I was born in New York.” “But what about your parents?” “Yeah, they were born in New York too.” “And your grandparents?” “Also New York. Before that, I’m a quarter Austrian and three quarters…I dunno, Polish, Russian…really hard to tell as they were from small Jewish villages that no longer exist.” “Oh, you’re Jewish?” “Yeah, ethically.” “Oh, so you’re Israeli!” “Um, no, I’ve never been to Israel.” Ad nauseum…

Damn typos. “ethnically”, not “ethically”. Ethically I’m a humanist. πŸ˜‰

Haha! Brilliant! It shocks me how homogenous people assume Australians must be. “You don’t have blonde hair and blue eyes and white skin – how can you be Australian?” I’m happy to answer but have started asking why they asked that question and whether they would ask someone more “caucasian looking” the same…

Thanks for sharing this vid! ‘I love your people’s fish and chips’ haha!
I’ve been thinking about this a lot since moving back to Australia after living 2 years in Germany. My great grandmother immigrated from Scotland. So I’m third generation Australian, but because I’m caucasian… no one ever asks a thing. Sadly, in my experience, Australia is a fairly racist country. I believe we should never forget that 99% of us are immigrants in one way or another!
